When a student takes the Woodcock-Johnson V (WJ V) with a Parallel provider, the provider administers and scores the assessment remotely through the Riverside platform. This article explains what you do to help the provider run the assessment successfully.
A virtual WJ V uses two tools at the same time:
- Pathway: the video session, where the provider sees and talks with the student.
- Riverside: where the actual WJ V test items appear on the student’s device.
Part of your job is getting the student into both. You do not administer, prompt, or score any part of the test. Your job is to set up the environment, help the student connect, support them during the session, and act as the provider’s eyes and ears in the room.
Who this is for
School staff who have been asked to sit with a student as the in-room facilitator during a virtual WJ V session.
Before the session
Set up the space
- Choose a quiet room with minimal distractions and no other students.
- Make sure the student is seated comfortably.
- Ensure that any response booklets the provider provided you have been printed and are available for use.
Get the devices ready
- Confirm each device is charged or plugged in and connected to reliable internet.
- Test the audio and confirm the student can hear clearly. This step is especially important! See the note in the “During the session” section.
- A touchscreen device (iPad or Chromebook) is required to complete the assessment. A separate device should be used to join the Pathway session if available.
- Have any physical items the provider requested nearby but out of the student’s reach until the provider asks for them.
ℹ Note Some WJ V processing-speed subtests require a touchscreen device with low tap latency and cannot be given without one. Ask the provider whether the assessment includes these subtests so you can have the right device ready.
Getting connected: the video and the test
Step 1: Join the Pathway video session
The provider schedules the session and gives you a way to join it. On the day of the session, join using the link or code provided to you. There are several ways:
- Pathway Calendar: Sign in to the Parallel platform at app.parallellearning.com, open the Calendar, click the session you want, and select Join Session.
- Daily Session Summary email: Each morning you receive a Daily Session Summary in your registered email. Click the link for the correct session.
- Session code: Go to telehealth.parallellearning.com/join and enter the 5-digit session code shown on your Pathway calendar or in the Daily Session Summary email.
- Short code: A 6-digit fixed code for a campus or student that opens a session lobby without prompting you to log in. Request your campus or student short code from your Customer Success Manager.
If you have two devices, is strongly recommended that you join the session on one device, and open the Riverside test on the touchscreen device.
Step 2: Open the Riverside test
The provider creates the test in Riverside and sends you an examinee link and a test code. On the student’s test device:
- Go to riversidescore.com/examinee - this is your examinee link.
- Enter the test code the provider gives you, then click "Join Session". The screen will look like this:
💡 Tip When possible, use two devices - one for the Riverside test and one for the Pathway video. This keeps the test items as large as possible, which supports more valid results.
Step 3: Arrange the screen (single device only)
If the student is using two devices, put the Riverside test in full screen on the test device and keep Pathway on the other. If the student is using one device for both, arrange the windows side by side:
- Give Riverside about two-thirds of the screen, on the left.
- Give Pathway about one-third, on the right.
- Do not use an even 50/50 split. Larger test items lead to more valid results, especially on visual and timed tasks.
Before you start
- Confirm the student can clearly see the test items and that they are large enough.
- Confirm the audio is working.
During the session: your role
You act only on the provider’s direction. Think of yourself as the provider’s hands and ears in the room.
The audio cues and your support
On the WJ V, some test items will play audio for listening or sound based tasks. That audio plays only on the student's side, meaning the provider may not hear it through their own interface. Because of this, the provider may ask for your assistance to relay cues about what the student heard.
During audio items, you may need to:
- Confirm the audio played and that the student could hear it clearly.
- Signal when a clip has finished so the provider knows when to continue.
- Flag if the student needs a replay or looks confused about what they heard.
- Report immediately if the audio fails or is cut off.
Without these cues, the provider cannot reliably pace or score the audio items. This is why the facilitator is an active part of the assessment, not just a proctor.
Other in-the-moment support
- Present items only when asked. If the provider asks you to show or hand the student something, do so on their cue.
- Help with attention and comfort. You may redirect the student to the screen or offer a short break at the provider’s direction.
⚠ Warning Do not coach or explain. Never help the student answer, hint at answers, repeat instructions in your own words, or react to whether an answer is right or wrong. If the student asks you a question about the test, direct them back to the provider.
Test security
- Do not record, screen-capture, or photograph any part of the session or the test items.
- Do not copy or share test materials.
- Return any physical materials to the provider or to Parallel as instructed.
If something goes wrong
- Audio fails or will not play: Tell the provider right away and wait for their direction.
- The Riverside test won’t load or is stuck on a permission screen: Let the provider know, and try refreshing your screen. Slow loading may be due to poor internet connection.
- Connection drops: Stay with the student, and reconnect to the test using the same link. The provider will resume once the connection is restored.
- Student becomes distressed or disengaged: Let the provider know; they will decide whether to take a break or pause the session.
